Daft Punk Robot Heads project

Monday 02th November 2009 - Rigged. Now onto lighting!

Now that I have the character rigged up i thought I'd start a new page and begin with some simple images against lights and lasers and the like. These images in the bg are just googled pics tweaked n blurred a bit but otherwise they are the renders straight out of maya. I've tweaked the jacket texture too adding some detail around the body. I particularly like the green image.

Monday 1st February 2010 - picking this project up too!

Couple of stills from my daftpunk robot project (I seem to do robots alot lol!). I've used Boujou to motion track the camera footage. It still needs work which is why I haven't put a .mov up or anything yet and also I'm in the midst of redesigning my site so need to optimise alot of it. I've done some test composites of my robot amidst the footage tho to see how it looks...

Sunday 8th March 2010 - its changed again lol!

I heard that Daft Punk are going to be doing the soundtrack or part of it to the upcoming Tron Legacy movie. With that in mind I figured it would be rude to not use this project to create a kind of collaboration between my Daft Punk robot and the moody lighting that the new Tron movie uses. I quite like these renders and I think I've found the direction this project is going to go in. The sky is actually from a Tron poster which I've just tiled a bit. I'm going to try and create some handheld camera moves by using Boujou to track my handheld camera motion to give a bit of camera authenticity. I've also, with the help of a rather excellent python script, used a rather funky voxelizing technique on a couple of characters which I've put in the background of one of the images. I would like to somehow use this effect somewhere if possible... maybe if the character res's into the environment he could kind of come in with this effect and leave in a similar blocky manner... I kind of homage to retro visuals but with a more 3d touch heh. I've got a couple of cool ideas I think will work well with it anyways so I'll be putting a test up soon...

Sunday 14th November 2010 - Motorstorm Apocalypse nearly finished so picking up this again...

With work being nearly completed on Motorstorm Apocalypse and the advent of Tron Legacy about to hit the cinema I figured it would be a good time to pick up this project and try and get it finished around the point of the movie coming out as a little personal tribute. I decided that it would be fun to have the daftpunk character on a tron bike but I didn't want to do a direct tron bike as such. I figured a kind of 4 wheeled low slung vehicle that the character rests on would be interesting...

I'd like the Tron character to be approached by recognisers and a short combat/chase sequence happen. This gives me an excuse to do the cool tron style materialisation of the bike from the disc on his back! n_n

Tuesday 16th November 2010 - finally get to do some project work after 8 months!

Finally got a bit of spare time to put some more work into this project. Changed some shapes on the model and bulked it up a little bit. Started some test renders using MR DGS material shaders which give a much more convincing metal effect than any blinn or anisotropic shader...

Thursday 18th November 2010 - more bike...

Quite happy with these images - the bike is starting to come together quite nicely. Need to get more neon in there and some more cut lines through the bodywork - maybe a subtle change of metal shader too on some panels...

Friday 19th November 2010 - adding neon bits...

working a little more detail in - added neon strip around the bike to break up the metal surfaces a little. Its nearly finished but some detail needs working around his feet and where his hands are. After this I'll be trying a basic lightcycle light streak test off the wheels which I think will be fun...

Sunday 21st November 2010 - turntable of tron light Quad :)

Worked on this till about 4:30am on saturday night doh! I managed to pretty much get the bike finished. I still need to work some detail in around the feet and handlebar controls but overall its looking quite cool I think and feels very much in vein visually and stylistically with the new Tron Legacy movie...
