Ants Video Reference Blog

A place for short movies, interesting videos, insiring creative shorts, 3d animation and other cool stuff!

Thurs 23rd July 2009 - Blur Studios - A Gentleman's Duel

I probably shouldn't post this bit of info up but if you dig hard enough on youtube you'll find the full 8 minute movie and its loaded with awesome! Its also perfect reference for my mech fight with fast snappy fight exchanges between both mechs. Some of the ground fighting is brilliant where the white mech tries to punch the one on the floor and he just gets out the way before retaliating. I should incorporate something like that in my mech fight wip as it really feels like a scuffle. I've included the trailer embedded on my site but if you 'shop' around you'll probably find the full film online. All in all - great work!

Mon 13th July 2009 - Neil Blomkamp

Well I've heard of this chap before as he put together what looked to be a bloody good trailer for an upcoming Halo movie. He's also noted for doing the Citreon Transformers advert where the car skates and dances. However he's also done some more interesting stuff in the past - one of my faves is this advert for Nike where a shoe evolves. What I like about it is the time lapse style photography with its slight twitchy image, noise, grain, light bleed & exposure. I like the way sounds of fabric & material are mixed with the sounds of a growing plant fighting its way through undergrowth...

and here is another video - this was a competition by Adidas where you had to create a short film based on an emotional and creative response to a given colour - in Blomkamps case - Yellow. The visual fx are amazing...

Wed 8th July 2009 - Ratatouille - behind the scenes of the washing machine

good youtube movie showing the basic steps taken to editing this short sequence in Pixars Ratatouille. Starting out with storyboards and animating them to audio to get a feel for whats happening, then working through the various stages till the final rendered shot with special fx is ready to go in. Great video!

Monday 6th July 2009 - Movie Opening Titles Galore!

Interesting article below... some good examples and why they work and lots of links at the side to other interviews on all kinds of titles from movies - Old and new and you can view most of them as quicktime movies too! The coolest most awesome page I've found in ages! Click on the banner to go to the site :)

These are awesome - links to pages that show the best title sequences created over the years in movie history. Theres some brilliant ones that instantly set you up for the mood of the film. I figured it far better to just include direct links than try n copy paste all the youtube links myself but theres some brilliant inspiration here for graphic design title sequences. Some of the youtube links are broken thanks to Youtubes naff 'you cant show this cos it belongs to someone else' nonsense which is as good a reason for any viewer to say 'well sod yer then I wont buy the bloody movie' but a bit of digging around should help you find the missing link. Titles worthy of watching on this page are things like Catch me if you can, Se7en & Panic Room. Click on the site logo below to visit the page!

Monday 6th July 2009 - Bicentennial Man Titles

I really loved these titles first time I saw them - the text interacting with the background imagery and emulating the mechanical machinery nature in most of the sequence is really cool :) Unfortunately the user disabled the video embedding on youtube so I can only put a link up instead...

Bicentennial Man Titles

Monday 6th July 2009 - Voyager Titles

I was watching this the other day on telly (big Voyager fan) and I've always liked the titles so thought I'd stick them up on my page. Would love to do something like this in the future.

Monday 8th June 2009 - Thinking with Portals

Always loved the whole concept behind this game but I do love the way this video is done like some scientific orientation video for new employees especially where the diagrams just get crazier and crazier!

Monday 8th June 2009 - The blog page starts - here's my first find!

Well I've decided to start a blog page that will display all things I find that I think are rather cool - most of it will more than likely be on youtube as my primary aim is to find animation & motion graphics that provide a source of inspiration for me. So with that in mind here's the first thing I've decided to post up - I actually came about it after chasing up the initial videos for Portal. I accidentally found these kinetic typography experiments and they really make me wanna have a go myself so i'll probably make it a quick 2 week project very soon if not tonight lol!
